Body Mass Index (or BMI) is currently the most common indicator used by health professionals and professional trainers to determine whether you need to lose weight. Here is what you need to know about BMI.
If your BMI is:
less than 25 – you don’t need to lose weight.
25 to 30 - you are overweight and should attempt to lose a few pounds.
over 30 - you are considered obese (severely overweight) and need to lose weight immediately to avoid adverse health conditions such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, stroke and diabetes.
To compute your BMI divide your weight by your height in inches, divided again by your height in inches, and then multiply by 703.
Be aware that the BMI is not a perfect indicator. Muscle weighs more than fat, so exceptionally fit individuals with a lot of muscle mass may have a high BMI when they don’t need to lose weight. For most people though, the BMI is a good tool.
